Double homicide investigation continues

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- There's new information that links the two victims of Monday's deadly shooting in Yakima, to events that led up to the murder of a 43-year-old Yakima man in June.

Yakima police say they were getting ready to file malicious mischief charges against 18-year-old Jobany Martinez, and 17-year-old Jose Avilez for events that led up to the shooting of 43-year-old David Silva at his home on Cherry Avenue back in June.

Police say Martinez and Avilez, who were both killed in Monday's shooting near the Yakima Greenway, were suspected of breaking windows at the Silva home some time before Mr. Silva was killed.

However, police say they do not have any evidence linking the two men to the murder itself.

"Frankly, in the world of gang activity it's very common to have members of different gangs involved in multiple investigations at the same time. It just so happens, these two cases, there's a common thread there involve homicides," said YPD Lt. Mike Merryman.

He says right now they have no evidence of a connection between the Silva family and Monday's shooter, Lameiro Flores, so they do not believe the recent killings were in any way a retaliation to the Silva murder.

Police are still piecing together evidence from this week's shooting and Flores is behind bars, his bail is set at $2 million.
