Crews still searching for missing drowning victim

BUENA, Wash.-- Day three in the search for the body of a 16-year-old boy who's presumed drowned in Buena Pond.

Rescue crews say the murky water has been a big problem for them during this search.

The victim's family called police late Monday, after the 16-year-old didn't return from a swimming trip with friends.

Crews have been out on the pond since Tuesday using cameras, sonar, and rescue divers to try and locate the boy's body.

Unfortunately, the pond is about 40 feet deep in some areas which makes it impossible to see in and dangerous for divers.

"There's all the vegetation down there. I've had divers had to cut themselves free of the vegetation at least twice. So, it's dangerous to dive," said Lt. Brian Winter with the Yakima County Sheriff's Office.

The pond was built out of a gravel pit that was dug during the I-82 construction.

Lt. Winter says the Sheriff's Office is working to bring in more resources to help with the search, including a submersible device that uses a special sonar system.

But because search and rescue is a volunteer operation, they're pretty limited with their resources and man power.
