RICHLAND, Wash.- Governor Gregoire celebrates the growth of local farmers markets in the state by declaring this week, Washington Farmers Market Week.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced today that the number of direct sales from markets increased close to 10% in the past year.

And Governor Gregoire wants to recognize consumers and farmers for the growth.

Rachelle Walchli with Bob Walchli Farms is seeing the increase and says when consumers buy produce from local farmers markets, they know where it comes from.

Walchli also says farmers markets give them the opportunity to teach consumers how to pick and chose vegetables that are ripe.

The Washington Farmers Market Association is also making it easier for local farmers and consumers by accepting credit cards and food assistance benefits for shoppers.

There's currently 160 farmers markets across the state.
