Yakima YouthBuild program recruits students

Posted: Updated:

Yakima, WASH.--The YouthBuild program in Yakima is currently recruiting new students.

YouthBuild is a national program sponsored by the Department of Labor.

The program targets young adults, between the ages of 18 and 24, who have dropped out of high school.

Hundreds will apply, but just 30 students will be selected to participate this year.

Participants will split their time between taking classes, building homes for low-income families, and doing community service.

"They made a poor decision," said Ron Gill, YouthBuild Program Manager. "They dropped out of school, and we want to give them a second chance at life so that they can put things back together, learn some job skills, get their education and be productive in their future."

After participants have completed the program, staff will help them build a resume or send out college applications.

The program will stop accepting applications Wednesday.
