Med Students in Yakima Building Homes

YAKIMA, Wash. -- First-year medical students from Pacific Northwest University were busy building houses today.

Part of their orientation includes volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. This is their second year helping out the program.

Students say they want to improve their community in every way possible, not just through providing health care.

"It's important to us that status isn't involved in the way that we serve the community because you know, there is definitely some differences being a doctor but that was one of the things that when we talked as a class that was important to us that we're here to serve," says Kristi Trickett.

This is Habitat for Humanity's first project for this fiscal year. Medical students say it was important for them to volunteer in the Yakima Valley because of the large underserved population.
