Naches forest fire almost contained

Naches, WASH.--A forest fire that started on Friday in Naches is now 70 percent contained.

The fire spread 30 acres along Highway 12, near Windy Point Campground. Several different agencies worked together to contain the fire.

"It was large enough and in terrain that was difficult, and it was threatening land so we decided to bring in a Type 3 Team that could help manage that," said Incident Commander Kimiko Nalle.

George Mondt runs a business along the same highway the fire started. "It is very frightening, especially if the wind is in the wrong direction," said Mondt. "It can travel so fast. It was incredible how fast it jumped the river there."

Firefighters said high temperatures during the past few weeks have made conditions extremely dry.

"An ember coming from a campfire or the lightning that we've had or anything that could spark a fire," said Nalle. "We are in high fire danger."

Firefighters said people need to pay close attention to burn restrictions in the area. You can be fined if caught having a campfire in a restricted zone.

"Campfires are restricted which means no campfires, no charcoals that have the use of briquettes or any tiki-torches or candles," said Nalle. "Those are prohibited."

"If you want to come back to the area, you should be careful with it because as long as you protect it-- it will be there to use," said Mondt.

No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Firefighters said the fire should be fully contained by Monday afternoon.
