Explorer Police Academy jump starts kids for a future in law enforcement
PASCO, Wash.- Police officers from all over the state are joining forces with Washington kids for a week long intensive police academy.
It's a way for kids to learn and jump start a career in law enforcement.
Pasco Police Department and Columbia Basin College is hosting this years Washington State Law Enforcement Explorer Academy for kids ages 15 to 20.
More than 150 cadets hit the ground running Monday to experience some of the same training that police officers in the state are required to go through.
Sunnyside Police Officer, Scott Orate says more than a dozen police officers in his department went through the Explorer Academy.
Officer Orate says, "We introduce a lot of stress into the Explorers to kind of break them down to build them up. We don't want them to be individuals. We want them to start to learn to work as a team."
There are different levels of cadet training, beginning with Basic Explorers to the more Advanced Explorer cadets, who returns year to year.
The summer Explorer Academy will go through August 18th.
