Wildfire Grows to 28,000 Acres near Cle Elum

CLE ELUM, Wash. (AP) - A fire commander says a wildfire that has destroyed at least 70 homes and burned across more than 40 square miles on the east slope of Washington's Cascade Mountains is 10 percent contained.

Incident commander Rex Reed said Tuesday night that containment line was built around the southeast corner of the Taylor Bridge Fire.

In addition to the homes, Reed estimates several hundred outbuildings have burned. At least 900 people have been evacuated as the fire burns in grassland, timber and sagebrush east of Cle Elum. No injuries have been reported.

UPDATE: CLE ELUM, Wash. (AP) - Firefighters say a fast-moving wildfire has now burned 60 homes and forced over 400 people to evacuate near Cle Elum.

A State Department of Natural Resources spokesperson says the blaze has grown to at least 26,000 acres since it started Monday afternoon just east of town. Fire officials say more homes are burning and others are threatened. So far, no injuries have been reported.

Nearly 200 firefighters from across the state are working to contain the blaze. Crews say eight more teams from other counties including Yakima and King Counties will take over fighting the flames this morning.

Kittitas County Sheriff's are warning those in the fire's path to evacuate. There is an emergency shelter set up at the Centennial Senior Center in Cle Elum, animals can be taken to the Kittitas County Fairgrounds.

The fire is also threatening the Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Cle Elum. Some property has burned but a worker says the chips are OK.

The Washington State Department of Transportation says Highway 10 and a 14-mile section of U.S. Highway 97 are closed because of the fire.
