CLE ELUM, Wash. – Firefighters getting help from calmer winds hope to make progress containing the wildfire that has burned 70 homes and more than 40 square miles near Cle Elum.

Fire Commander Rex Reed says right now 800 firefighters focus on preventing the fire from reaching a neighborhood near Cle Elum.

The fire broke out Monday at a bridge construction site. Reed says authorities have evacuated some 400 homes, nearly one-thousand people. No one has been hurt.

The Department of Natural Resources says firefighters have the fire about 10 percent contained.
