Organizations taking donations for Taylor Bridge fire victims

ELLENSBURG, Wash.-- The Taylor Bridge fire has destroyed dozens of homes and forced hundreds of people to evacuate. Many of our viewers want to know how they can help.

Many different organizations are taking donations, but not all of them are taking the same kind.

The American Red Cross and many other organizations in the area are only looking for money, especially from outside the Kittitas County Area. They're focusing on the immediate needs of people displaced and monetary donations help them to be flexible.

"You're able to make sure that they have the shelter... They have the food they have... If their prescriptions burned in the fire or their glasses... That we're able to get those and buy those for them," says Lisa Reinhart with the American Red Cross.

However, not all places are only taking money. Some places like the Holiday Inn Express on Canyon Road are taking all sorts of different things from things like clothing, to body wash and shampoo.

"We had an employee that wanted to... You know gather some clothes and belongings for them... So we started taking donations... And it expanded into this... And volunteers just kinda came out of the woodwork," says Holiday Inn Express General Manager Brittany Steward.

For people forced to leave their homes... It's a welcome sight.

"Turn around... There's just some little thing that you remember you have to do or something you remember you lost in the fire... And it's just... It's hard," says Evacuee Ed Taasevigen.

For Taasevigen, it's a ray of light in a difficult situation.

"We've always done our part to help the community and now that ... We're on the receiving end of it... To see all of this is just incredible," he says.
