Second brush fire to break out off SR 397 in 24 hours

Posted: Updated:

NEAR FINLEY, Wash.-- A brush fire broke out off of SR 397 Saturday afternoon.

At 3:15pm around fifteen Benton County firefighters were called to a brush fire off of SR 397 on South Owens Road. That's just a few miles away from Friday night's brush fire at mile post six on SR 397.

Flames were still burning many feet in the air and every time a little wind picked up, those flames would flare up. Firefighters got to the scene quickly and were able to contain the fire that burned about four acres.

Battalion Chief Tod Kreutz from the Kennewick Fire Department says they think it was caused by people target shooting in the area and popping sounds from the fire indicated there were likely bullets burning.

"Initial reports said it was from someone shooting in the area and obviously that is a hazard especially on days like this when we have such high temperatures and low humidity and the fuels are extremely, extremely dry," says Kreutz.

Kreutz warns that bullets can easily spark a fire and stresses the importance of people not target shooting there and especially in this weather.

Kreutz says that area on SR 397 is known for target shooting and this is the result of such negligent behavior.
