Prosser house fire requires multiple agencies to put it out

PROSSER, Wash.-- A residential fire in Prosser Sunday morning called for multiple fire agencies to put it out. The burned house on Foisy Road is now completely destroyed.

When firefighters arrived half of the house was in flames and required firefighters from Prosser, Benton County, Hanford and Yakima.

"The fire was so intense we had to do a defensive fire which fight fire from the outside and portions of the building have collapsed," says Chief Doug Merritt, Prosser Fire District 3.

This house fire required a lot of attention because of the fire's size, dry conditions and hot weather. One of Chief Merritt's biggest concerns was this time of year when firefighters are battling fires constantly.

"All the crews in Benton County have been just working real hard in the last couple of weeks on fires and everybody is tired. We just have to make sure we get enough people here so that we swap our folks out and don't hurt anybody," says Merritt.

Luckily the homeowners weren't hurt either. They were out of town, but when firefighters arrived on the scene they didn't know if anyone was inside. That's when Benton County Sheriff's Office stepped in to establish contact.

"Eventually the word got out and a church member came to me and said that they thought they could contact the homeowner and they did. I just got a call from the homeowner and confirmed that everybody is out of the house," says Corporal Scott Hutson.

Chief Merritt says this fire could've been much worse by spreading to neighbors houses and nearby fields. The house has lots tall plants around it and low lying branches over it, which posed a serious fire risk.

"The brush hazards are it's vegetation and it could get into that and spread and go other places and then we have a natural cover fire on our hands along with a structure fire," says Merritt.

Chief Merritt says it's very important for homeowners to maintain trimmed vegetation around their house to prevent larger fires and that it's just fortunate this fire didn't spread to something even bigger. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
