Collection scams growing in our area

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash., - The Better Business Bureau is warning of a growing scam in our area.

They say scammers are calling and impersonating collection agents. The scammers demand immediate payment with a credit card or they ask to verify your identity by requesting a social security number. All of which The BBB says are red flags.

"You should never be giving your personal information over the phone to them, they should already have it. A legitimate collector, they have all the information of the purchase you made or service you had, when it happened and how much is owed, they should have all that information," said Chelsea Dannen, BBB representative.

Dannen says the best way to prevent becoming a victim of this scam is to ask the caller for their contact info and address. then confirm that information before you write a check.
