WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Some clean up progress made at Blue Ridge Elementary and Pre-School in Walla Walla after a fire broke out in the basement cafeteria area of the school on Monday.
School officials say the damage is estimated to be about $250,000 but insurance will cover it. In the meantime, restoration and clean up staff are rushing to have it up and running by September 4th, for the first day of school.
"They did some defogging of the building to help take out some of the smoke smell and now they will go down and wipe down the entire building," says Dad Johnson the facilities and operations manager for Walla Walla Public Schools.
Johnson says they hope to have it cleaned up by next Wednesday, and then they'll do an air quality control check before letting the staff and children back in. In the meantime, students who need to register are being directed to go the "Transportation Cooperation Building". located at 1162 Entley Street, next too Koncrete Industries. Staff is taking calls at 509-527-3019.
