Bureau of Reclamation starting annual river "Flip Flop" today

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- The Bureau of Reclamation's annual river "Flip Flop" is underway.

Workers will drop the water flow coming from the Cle Elum Reservoir and increase the water coming from the Rimrock Reservoir.

The bureau changes the water level to make room for next year's watershed and to help keep the salmon run healthy.

"What we do... Is we look at those areas that are where the fish spawn and we try to protect those by reducing the flows," Says Chris Lynch with the Bureau of Reclamation.

The bureau increases flows from the Rimrock Reservoir so farmers still have enough water for their crops. They'll switch the rivers back to normal around October.
