Kiwanis Club working to honor longtime member

YAKIMA, Wash.-- Members of the Apple Valley Kiwanis club are working to honor longtime member and community advocate, Ron Bonlender.

Bonlender passed away last October and the club wants to rename the "Apple Valley Kiwanis Skate Park" after the former city council member.

Current club president Susan Whitman says Bonlender worked to raise a lot of the money used to build the skate park in 2008.

"He loved the eastside of Yakima. He wanted things on this side. He lived here, he worked here, he played here and wanted to keep the eastside just as nice as the westside," said Whitman.

The name change process is just getting started, but the Parks and Recreation manager says they're working to get the paperwork drawn up so the city council can make a decision in October.
