KENNEWICK, Wash. -- NBC Right Now has an update on a road improvement project in the works for the city of Kennewick. between 27th Avenue and SR 397. The 3.6 million dollar project was supposed to begin this Summer, but it's going to be a few months before it starts.

Evelyn Lusignan, the Customer Service Manager with the city says the hope is to begin construction on the $3.6 million project before November.

She says studies suggest it's expected to improve road safety by about 80%. This is an area many residents feel is relatively dangerous. In, June there was a fatal motorcycle crash along 45th Avenue and Olympia, and part of the project is putting in a round about at that intersection.

Currently the speed limit going North to South is 35 MPH, but many residents have said some drivers don't follow it. Lusignan says they've already finished the design work."It is a lengthy process with getting all the right of way certifications and coordinating with the grant funding and working with the environmental issues with the state. So some of those things take a little bit longer to get in place. But we're pretty close out to get that project out to bid."

She says the city hopes to have the bid out by October and hopefully begin construction in November. Pedestrian improvements to serve the growing residential neighborhoods in southeast Kennewick will also be constructed.
