One out of 2 fires contained

Yakima, WASH.--Two fires raged near Yakima Friday night. One of those fires is still going, and has burnt two out-buildings to the ground.

The fire on North Wenas Road near Selah started early afternoon Friday and spread fast.

"Our fuels are extremely dry this year," said Fire Incident Commander Dave Brown. "There as dry as we've seen them in the recent past and the winds were very erratic yesterday and blew the fire in several different directions in a short period of time."

The Wenas fire has grown to 1600 acres and is now 85 percent contained. Firefighters said it has threatened several homes and destroyed two out-buildings in its path.

"They got into our house, got our dogs safe, got a couple of our cats safe and started doing what they could to get ready for the fire when it came," said Scott Willis.

Scott Willis was traveling with his family when the fire started. He said listening to those nine frantic voicemails was a very frightening moment.

"{It was} Very scary, very scary," said Willis. "That's a long ride from the top of White Pass to Naches not knowing what's going on."

Willis said his family rushed to the house after they saw the smoke. They started spraying hoses and doing whatever they could to keep the fire from engulfing the Willis' home.

"We owe them everything we have because of their hard word and quick thinking," said Willis.

When another fire broke out that same night, firefighters said they had to share some of their resources, which slowed operations down. However, it didn't affect control actions around the houses.

The Athanum Ridge Fire was fully contained early Saturday morning.

Crews predict the fire burned between 600 to 800 acres. Firefighters said several homes were threatened but none were damaged.

The causes of the two fires are still under investigation.
