Woman nearly drowns after jumping off party boat

FINLEY, Wash.-- A woman almost drowned near Two River's Park in Finley when some Labor Day weekend partying went too far.

Labor Day weekend often attracts people out to the water. Some get to carried away with partying and suddenly things aren't fun anymore. That's what happened last night.

A drunk woman jumped off a party boat into the river at Two River's Park and couldn't swim. A man jumped in after her and couldn't swim either.

A call for help sent five agencies to the scene, from Benton County Sheriff's Office to Walla Walla Boat Patrol. Currents can push a struggling swimmer down stream rapidly and officials want to catch the person as soon as possible. Before officials arrived a third person jumped in with life jackets and saved the woman and man who jumped in.

Benton County Sergeant Brockman says, it's important to have someone on board a boat who can watch out for passengers who may be drinking to prevent situations like this that can become deadly fast.

"You can quickly float away from the boat that you jumped out of so you get into the inability to make if back to where you need to be if you've over indulged and had too much to drink," says Brockman.

What adds a twist to all this is that the woman had two warrants out for her arrest for not paying fines. So after surviving a near drowning, she was arrested and taken to jail.
