Kennewick teen badly hurt after crashing car

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- A Kennewick teenager is fighting to stay alive after crashing a car through a fence and slamming into a tree.

Jacob Matyear is just 15 years old, so it's still not clear why he was driving in the first place, but police say he was traveling along 45th Avenue near Beech Street in Kennewick Sunday night around 11:20 PM when he lost control of the car, crashed through a fence, and then hit a tree and bushes.

Neighbors rushed to help the 15 year old driver, and they say he was the only person in the car and was wearing his seat-belt. The woman who lives next door says she thinks he was going at least 20 miles over the speed limit. "I would say just based off the marks on the roadway, from my training experience, it was well over 40 MPH," says Cpl. Matt Newton.

"I heard a lot of skidding and then a loud boom. So we ran across the street and pretty much saw a huge cloud of dust. We ran over there and there were two other ladies that were there at the same time I was there. I pulled the passenger door open to make sure there was no one else inside," says Angela Pidcock, a neighbor who said the boy had serious injuries to his head.

Police don't think alcohol played a factor but that is still under investigation. Neighbors say the car he was driving, without a license. was his grandmother's. Newton says Matyear is in critical condition at Kadlec Regional Center, but the hospital will not release any information due to privacy laws.
