KENNEWICK, WA - The Benton Franklin Suicide Prevention Coalition is hosting the 4th Annual "Walk About to Talk About Suicide Prevention" walk on Saturday, September 15th.

Beginning at 10:30 AM in the parking lot of Outback Steakhouse on Canal Drive in Kennewick, the walk will be held to raise awareness about suicide prevention.

Suicide Prevention Week this year is September 9th through 15th. It's a time to focus on the facts and prevention. The BFSPC says there are definite risk factors and warning signs, but also specific ways to help, and that most suicides are preventable.

Between 2004 and 2008, BFSPC says there were 118 recorded suicides in Benton-Franklin Counties, and nearly 20% were men between the ages of 45 and 54.  Also between 2004 and 2008 were 592 hospitalizations in Benton-Franklin Counties as a result of suicidal behavior - the majority of these were either women in their early 20's or women aged 45-54.  Fifty-six percent of all suicides were done with a firearm; the majority of the non-fatal hospitalizations were a result of overdose.

For the first time at this year's walk, the coalition plans to present to the public a unique project titled "If you only knew...Youth Voice Through Art."
