Perry Tech launching new medical assistant program

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- Yakima's Perry Technical Institute is looking for students for their new medical assistant program.

Assistants work on administrative and clinical tasks like measuring a patient's vital signs, taking down their medical history, and scheduling appointments.

The school says the need for these workers is expected to increase by more than 30 percent by 2020.

"There's a huge demand. Career colleges nation wide... Most of them offer this program.. We don't have anything like this program we're offering here," says Perry Tech President Christine Cote.

Cote says the aging baby boomer population is the primary reason behind the need for more medical assistants.
