Short season for recreation

NEAR PASCO, Wash. - Summer is still hanging on in the Pacific Northwest but finding fun outdoor activities is getting a little more difficult. The Army Corps of Engineers is dealing with nearly $700,000 cut in the recreation budget this year. So many Corps parks opened late and now many have closed early.

"We're doing the best we can to work within the budgets we're authorized and we don't make the decision lightly but this is what it's come down to this year," said Natural Resource Specialist Heather Humphreys.

The gates are now locked at Hood and Charbonneau Park campgrounds along the Snake River. The boat launches, however, remain open year round. At Fishhook both the park and boat launch are closed. Levey Park and Windust boat ramps are also closed.

The Corps has not yet seen budget numbers for next year.
