Kennewick, WA- A four-goal second period catapulted the Tri-City Americans (2-1) to a 6-3 victory over the Kootenay Ice (0-1) in the first game of the Red Lion Hotels Pre-Season Tournament.

The first period was empty on the score sheet, but the second period made up for it in a two minute span. Brian Williams scored first for the Americans, with assists by Jordan Messier and Clint Filbrandt. Less than a minute later, the Americans scored again, this time by Connor Rankin and assisted by Williams and Justin Gutierrez. Parker Wotherspoon added one more goal a minute later with assists by Gutierrez and Lucas Nickles.

Kootenay would get on the board midway through the second on a shorthanded goal by Luke Philp. But Tri-City would answer two minutes later on a Marcus Messier power play goal, assisted by Gutierrez and Drydn Dow to give the Americans a 4-1 lead heading into the final period.

It took 24 seconds for the Americans to get on the board in the third period, with Rankin scoring his second goal of the night. Kootenay would add a goal early in the third by Philp and a goal late in the game by Kyle O'Connor to bring the Ice within two. But Malte Strömwall sealed the win for the Americans by scoring on a wide-open net because of a Wotherspoon pass with 30 second left in the game.

The two teams combined for 112 penalty minutes. Eric Comrie got the start in goal for the Americans and stopped all 13 shots he faced. Brenden Fiebelkorn came in and made 11 saves.  Kootenay's goalie Mackenzie Skapski had a long night in net, saving 21 of 27 shots.

The Americans play tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. against the Seattle Thunderbirds in the night game of the second day of the Red Lion Hotels Pre-Season Tournament. The Everett Silvertips will take on the Spokane Chiefs at 11 a.m. and the Kootenay Ice will take on the Portland WInterhawks at 3 p.m.
