West Richland boy helps homeless four years in a row

Posted: Updated:

WEST RICHLAND, Wash. -- While most middle school kids are busy hanging out with friends and playing video games, one young man is using his free time and even his allowance to help the homeless. NBC Right now first met Devin Morasch when he was just eight years old.

He saved up all his allowance for the year and donated more than $100 to the "Raise Your Tent" event, an awareness campout put on By the Central United Protestant Church in Richland.

"Well I looked into this box and there's some pennies, nickels and dimes and some loose change in the bottom. But the thing that grabbed me was the little pink piggy bank," says Ben Cook, coordinator of Raise Your Tents. This year's event will be November 8-10th at John Dam Plaza in Richland.

This will be Devin's fourth year with Raise Your Tents and has a goal of raising $10,000 this year - quite a jump from last year - "but honestly, when he puts his mind to something, I'd put odds on him," says his mother, Julie Fisher.

"If it was you who was out on the street, you'd want someone to reach out and give you a hand and pull you back up...you wouldn't want someone to just leave you on the ground,"says Devin Morasch.

Devin has been speaking with a few local business owners and has received some really generous donations which he plans to auction off in the next few weeks.

This Saturday, September 8 from 8AM-1PM he's hosting a yard sale and lemonade stand at 1801 Diamond Head Way, West Richland. All proceeds will go to the Union Gospel Mission.
