Well known Yakima teacher and football coach died

Posted: Updated:

Yakima, WASH.--A longtime teacher and football coach in Yakima died Sunday night from an illness.

Tom O'Brien coached football at Marquette and Carroll Catholic High Schools, as well as Davis High School.

Scott Wells, one of the many players O'Brien mentored, said he was a tremendous coach, and that he was often intimidating but also loving at the same time.

"Anyone who has worked with him has big shoes to fill," said Wells. "He was huge, just a man, but his presence was enormous. It's the size of a stadium, and it can't ever be filled."

Wells said O'Brien will be greatly missed by the community.  O'Brien was 78-years-old.

Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Cathedral.
