Pasco School District survey asking public if they'll give a bond another chance

Posted: Updated:

PASCO, Wash.-- Overcrowding at Pasco schools is a growing issue and the district knows it needs to be dealt with soon because the alternatives are widely unpopular.

The Pasco School District is concerned about the overcrowding in their elementary and middle schools. Enrollment numbers are far beyond their buildings' capacities. So now they're reaching out to the public to see if they might give a bond proposal a second chance.

Wednesday, the district released a survey asking the public if they would approve a bond for building more Pasco elementary schools. A bond measure failed to pass in 2011, but this new proposed bond would be sixty cents lower.

Pasco School District Assistant Superintendent, John Morgan, says this new survey will help the school board decide if they should put a bond on the ballot next February.

"When we put on an election, we have to pay those election costs and money is tight right now all around. We want to make sure that it's a wise decision and the community wants us to run that," says Morgan.

The district wants to build more elementary schools and expand them to run through sixth grade instead of fifth, to open up space in the middle schools and save them from needing new buildings until 2024.

The entire district's enrollment is over capacity by around twenty-five hundred students.

The survey was sent home with students Wednesday and is also available online on the school district's website.
