Aquatics Center Not Out of Reach for Tri-Cities

KENNEWICK, Wash.

A much debated aquatics center may still be within reach for the Tri-Cities.

Wednesday the Tri-Cities Regional Facilities District met to discuss its endorsement of the new aquatics center.

When the original decision was made, board members thought the aquatics center would be built at the TRAC facility. But a few weeks ago, Franklin County Commissioners decided to pull the plug on that plan.

Board members say they still want to pursue the aquatics center if they can find a location.

"It wants to give the Pasco Public Facilities a little extra time to see if they can bring an alternative in Pasco, as a location. We're going to give them until the November meeting," said Pasco Mayor Matt Watkins.

Mayor Watkins says the board also does want to have a backup plan in place just in case, which will likely be a new public arts facility.

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) - Authorities closed Interstate 5 south of Mount Vernon near Conway because of a three-vehicle crash that killed one person and injured others. The Skagit Valley Herald reports the collision occurred at about 1:15 p.m. when a semi-truck failed to stop for traffic that had backed up near a construction zone. Washington State Patrol Trooper Heather Axtman says the truck rear-ended a passenger vehicle, causing it to crash into the vehicle in front of it.
