KENNEWICK, Wash. -- More than a thousand volunteers all across the Columbia Basin spent their Saturday pitching in and help fix up the community.

The projects are organized by the Church of Latter Day Saints and the cities. Volunteers repainted park benches, put up new roofs, and fixed windows at a senior center all over the region.

"Every year somewhere around September 11th, we try to have a day of service where we come out and do something to help improve our community, because this is the best place in the United States to live, " said Don Pratt the project manager who helped put up roofs at Lawrence Scott Park in Kennewick.

Pratt says, if anything positive came out of the 9-11 Tragedy, it's this national day of service., which usually falls around the anniversary.
