Mabton man shoots estranged wife then himselfPosted: Updated:
Mabton, WASH.--A man is dead and his estranged wife is in the hospital after an apparent attempted murder and suicide.
Yakima County Sheriff's Deputies said it happened Sunday night in Mabton as the two parents met to exchange their children.
Even though the couple was separated, Sheriff's Deputies said earlier information led them to believe they were on good terms. However, it turns out this may have not been the case, and deputies are working hard to find out why.
36-year old Jose Angel Lepe-Garcia shot the mother of his three children at least once before shooting and killing himself.
It all happened at Garcia's home on the 3000 block of Grandview Pavement Road.
Margarita Lepe was shot in the master bedroom and seriously wounded.
She was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Deputies said she went into stable condition early Monday evening, an upgrade from being in stable but critical condition.
The couple's three young children were inside the house when their mother was shot.
Sergeant Robert Udell of the Yakima County Sheriff's Office said, "I don't know what they saw in the first round of shootings, but Dad came out of the bedroom and had them go to the garage. From there, they heard more shots and never saw Dad again."
The 13-year-old daughter called 911.
Sheriff's Deputies said before the dad killed himself, he called up his brother to tell him he had done a bad thing and to come get the kids.
Deputies said the weapon used was a small caliber handgun.
This is the second deadly incident in this home.
The previous homeowner, Pedro Flores, was stabbed to death in the home last year.
