Jail inmate testifies, grilled by defense attorney

PASCO, Wash.- A county jail inmate says a man on trial told him how he plotted to murder his mother-in-law.

Clint Crowder told jurors he shared a cell with Todd Stuart for three months. Crowder says Stuart told him about a plan to drop a heavy box of books on top of Judy Hebert.

"The plan was for her to fall off the ladder, but it didn't come out the way they planned," Crowder testified.

Crowder says prosecutors haven't offered him a deal for his testimony. He says he came forward because it's the right thing to do. But under cross-examination, defense attorney Jeffery Robinson challenged the inmate's credibility and motives.

Crowder has several theft convictions and goes on trial next month on identity theft charges.

Robinson argues Stuart's wife, Tashia Stuart, acted alone in plotting and shooting her adoptive mother.

Tashia Stuart goes on trial for first-degree murder for next month.

She claims self-defense.
