Yakima forced to close downtown park

YAKIMA, Wash.-- The City of Yakima will have one less park soon.

Crews were taking out city property today in the downtown park on Yakima Avenue and Second Street. The property is privately owned, but the city had a license agreement to set up a park there.

The owner sent the city a letter earlier this week terminating their agreement and announcing she would fence off the property. People we spoke to on the street were sad to see it go.

"Take the dogs around or just rest or something while they were walking. It looked really nice, it's gonna look stupid fenced in," says Joyce Speaks, who used the park.

"It's just kind of a sad day... To watch them remove the cobblestones yesterday and watching them tear down the wooden structures today," says Lois Brotje, who works across the street.

The owner's decision came after the city denied her request to put a Starbucks drive-thru on the property. The owner plans to fence off the area by next month.
