OLYMPIA, Wash. - Governor Chris Gregoire has declared the month of October, "Archaeology Month" to raise awareness of the importance of cultural resources to Washington's heritage.

Gregoire signed a declaration last week to help people living in Washington better understand archaeological resources.  The Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation has joined with local area tribal nations, federal, state and local officials, local archaeological societies, universities, museums and private citizens to enhance the public awareness of the value of protecting Washington's archaeological heritage.

To celebrate, the DAHP has created a calendar of events and exhibits on its website. Visitors can find month long events, or see day specific events. So far 19 different groups are hosting nearly 30 special activities, already listed on the calendar. To check it out, click here
