WEST RICHLAND, Wash. - A young egret is now back in the wild. It took its first free flight Monday afternoon along the Yakima River in West Richland.
The egret had been in rehabilitation at the Blue Mountain Wildlife Center in Pendleton. Mary Marquez of Sunnyside initially rescued the white bird after its mother deserted the nest. On Monday, she released it.
The Wildlife Center says this is only the second egret of the rehabilitation center in the last 25 years. Workers there said they knew the egret was ready to go when it was eating half a pound of fish daily, and flying well.
