Former First Lady Laura Bush Speaks In Yakima

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- A large crowd packed into the capitol theatre in Yakima, hoping to hear words of wisdom and stories from a woman who is part of American history.

Former First Lady Laura Bush came to Yakima as part of the Yakima Town Hall Speaker Series. For the first time in 40 years season tickets sold out. Mrs. Bush gave a speech and sat down for an on-stage interview with our General Manager Christine Brown. The former first lady says her main goal is to educate people about life in the white house.

"What I learned there during those years, and what it was like to live there. I think people are interested in knowing about that. Understand that the people in the White House are not that different from how they are, that we're all Americans that we have many experiences that as nearly all Americans do. So this is a way for me to get to tell people what it was like to live in the White House during those years," Mrs. Bush says.

Members of the audience loved the speech.

"Oh she's incredible. I was amazed at her humor, her wisdom, her direct forthrightness. She was just an incredible lady, just, it was beautiful," says Jan Luring.

"She was wonderful. She's very warm, very articulate... We love her. 'course we love her Texas accent and she shared a lot of personal experiences in the White House that we have never heard of or have never seen. As a mother, I enjoyed her when I was raising my own children. I felt she was a good role model," says Caren Erickson.
