Next generation of volunteers gives back in Kennewick

KENNEWICK, Wash. -The next generation of volunteers gave back to the community Friday.

Members of the United Way Young Leaders Society helped paint figurines used to represent child abuse victims. The Support Advocacy and Resource Center (SARC) displays the figurines throughout the community to raise awareness about child abuse.

United Way coordinator for the City of Kennewick Shannon Frame says these college and work study students set the example for other young people in the community.

"They're really the future leaders of the country," Frame says. "They're just starting out. They're trying to balance their life, balance college, balance volunteering, and so this is really raising up the generation and showcasing our young leaders."

SARC says there were 540 reported cases of child abuse last year in Benton and Franklin Counties.
