Union Gap, WASH.--The long anticipated grand opening of JC Penny in Union Gap drew thousands of people, including many from out of state.

The new store at Washington Plaza opened its doors Friday morning.

The store leader gave a $10,000 grant to the Yakima Family YMCA.

Shoppers were pleased with the store's look, and happy to have a JC Penny's back in town.

Sherry Boucher checked out the new store. She said, "Looks great, love it. Sephora's in there, I'm real excited about that."

Mary Sanchez came all the way from Oregon to shop. She said, "{Her mom} She loves Penny's. She had been a customer for Penny's for many, many years. She was excited and called me up in Beaverton, Oregon, and I said yes mom, we will go shopping at Penny's."

The old JC Penny's closed down around 10 years ago due to poor sales.
