Latino voters turnout low

Posted: Updated:

A record twenty-four million Latinos are eligible to vote in the 2012 presidential election, according to an analysis by the Census Bureau. This is up by more than four million, since 2008, when 19.5 million Latinos were eligible to vote.

Latinos are the nation's largest minority group but the turnout rate of eligible Latino voters historically lags that of whites and blacks by substantial margins.

There aren't any nationwide data on Latino voter registration levels so far in 2012.

"Latino vote is very important because we are voting on very important issues that will impact us directly, will impact our children, our grandchildren and future generations. We really want everyone to go out there and vote," says Rosa Fernandez, Franklin County Auditor's Office.

The Franklin County Auditor's Office also wants to remind voters of the deadlines for the November 6th general election. The last day to mail a new or updated registration is Saturday, October 6th and the last day for online voter registration is Monday, October 8th.
