YAKIMA, Wash.-- The city of Yakima is considering closing part of a downtown street next year as part of a plan to improve the downtown area.
City manager Tony O'Rourke is looking to create a new public space on Fourth Street behind the Capitol Theatre. The area would host events ranging from the local farmers market to large concerts. O'Rourke says the change would be a win-win situation for Yakima.
"It's great! I think that downtown has enormous opportunities to be a destination for both residents and guests," Yakima City Manager Tony O'Rourke.
O'Rourke says if the city council moves forward with the plan at their meeting next week, they could have the street closed off and ready to go by next spring. He says the project wouldn't cost much because the city won't make any large changes to the area.
