Yakima City Council considering changes to graffiti codes

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- The city of Yakima wants to continue its efforts to crack down on graffiti throughout the city.

Tomorrow night, the city council will look at possible amendments to the Yakima graffiti code.

One involves adding an extra police officer to investigate graffiti incidents.

One major change would get rid of the $400 penalty for people who don't clean up their property in time.

"When you find graffiti on your garage door or, you know, some other part of your property, we don't want to be punishing the property owner.. We just want the graffiti cleaned up," Council Member Sara Bristol.

Under the new amendments, if the owner doesn't clean up their property within five days, the city will send in their own crew to do the job.

The city would also create a section on their website to make it easier for people to report graffiti.
