"Tour de Banks" robber charged with eight hold-ups
SEATTLE – The man dubbed the "Tour de Banks" robber has been charged with eight counts of first-degree armed robbery.
King County prosecutors say Cristian Babalai, 29, held up eight banks between January and September in the suburban Seattle communities of Bothell, Woodinville, Monroe and Mill Creek.
Court documents show investigators found a correlation among the robberies, Babalai's cash deposits, and his gambling losses. Prosecutors say cell phone records indicate the man was in the general area of each bank when the robberies took place.
The FBI says witnesses saw Babalai ride a bicycle to the banks he robbed. However, court documents say surveillance video showed Babalai sometimes drove a Mercedes-Benz.
FBI agents arrested Babalai Friday near his home in Bothell.
