RICHLAND,Wash.- Governor Chris Gregoire Friday toasted the Wine Science Center at the Tri- Cities campus of Washington State University.
Under blustery conditions, the governor signed the five million dollar investment passed by the state legislature.
The Wine Science Center will focus on research and education in viticulture, enology and wine business management.
"The research will allow us to continue to expand not only in acreage, but to maintain the high quality of our grapes and make the best wine in the world," Gregoire says.
The wine industry has raised 17 million dollars for the center and looks to raise another four million dollars to begin construction next fall.
The governor says the research and education inside the wine center will help the triple the economic impact of the wine industry, estimated to be worth nearly nine billion dollars.
