Number of stolen vehicles hits a high in Ellensburg
Ellensburg, WASH.--Lock up your car doors because Ellensburg Police said they've seen a spike in the number of stolen vehicles.
In the past month and a half, police have taken almost 20 reports of stolen cars.
At this same time last year, officers had only filed six reports.
Police also said there's typically only 20 to 30 cases of stolen cars a year. Therefore, to have nearly 20 in such a short time period is very unusual.
"We feel like with this bulk of number it's going to be the same group of people doing the majority of these thefts," said Captain Dan Hansberry of the Ellensburg Police Department. "So it's just a matter of time of getting a lead that directs us to that group of people."
Police said they've been able to recover all but two of the stolen cars.
None of the cars have been stripped or severely damaged, but the stereos were ripped out of many of them.
