SUNNYSIDE, Wash.-- A 3-year-old Sunnyside boy is still in critical condition after accidentally shooting himself in the head.

It happened Monday night in Sunnyside, in the area of Yakima Valley Highway and East Edison Avenue.

Police say the boy was riding in a truck with his father and two siblings when he found his father's gun and shot himself.

Police say the boy's father is cooperating and has a valid concealed weapons permit.

"It's just a, appears to be a tragic accident that is avoidable if you're making sure your guns are secure and you're carrying them safely," said Sgt. Joey Glossen, with the Sunnyside Police Dept.

Police have not yet filed charges against the boy's father, but Child Protective Services have been contacted.

Detectives continue to investigate this accident with help from the state crime lab.
