Teenager behind bars, suspected of murder

YAKIMA, Wash.-- A 15-year-old boy is behind bars, suspected of killing a 26-year-old man Wednesday night.

"That kid who shot that man and killed him, his life over," said Phil Dellinger, a regular transit rider.

Dellinger takes the bus from the Yakima Transit Center at Fourth Street and Chestnut just about every day. And while he's no longer surprised by the violence in Yakima, he still can't believe it happened so close to the main bus stop.

"We're becoming like a really big city now, and it's getting bad," Dellinger said.

The 15-year-old murder suspect appeared in a Yakima County Juvenile Courtroom Wednesday to face a charge of first degree murder.

Police say he and another man got into an argument with Octavio Rangel, 26. That's when the 15-year-old pulled out a gun, and shot Rangel to death.

"It's just something that's kind of shocking when you hear about it. It's like Yakima is getting kind of crazy," said Shaun Harvin, a frequent transit user.

Police have identified the second suspect who ran from the scene Tuesday night, but they have yet to make another arrest.

The transit center operated like normal on Wednesday, many bus riders learning about the murder for the first time.

"If I have to result in taking the bus, I'll try to stay, or keep a lookout for anything suspicious going on," Harvin said.

And for Phil Dellinger, sadness for a 15-year-old boy who could spend the rest of his life behind bars.

"Somebody should have been there for him, and there wasn't," Dellinger said.

The 15-year-old is in the Juvenile Detention Center, being held on 500-thousand dollar bail.

Court administrators say prosecutors could decide to charge him as an adult, but because of his age, that process could take some time.

Police do say the killing is gang related.
