Police say gang activity spike unusual for this time of year

Posted: Updated:

Yakima, WASH.-- Some Yakima neighborhoods have heard plenty of gunshots and sirens this past week.

Two separate gang shootings over the weekend injured three, and one man is dead after a 15-year old boy opened fire on a group of rival gang members Tuesday night.

Yakima Police said there definitely has been an increase in gang activity, but this spike is not uncommon.

Police said gang members tend to be more active from time to time, and this just happens to be one of those weeks.

However, what is unusual is the time of year this spike is occurring.

Police said increased gang activity usually happens in the summer during the hottest days.

"For this type of weather that we've been having their activity has actually been a lot more active than we normally see," said Sgt. David Cortez of the Yakima Police Department.

Police said even though there's been a spike in activity, they've been able to put away at least ten active and violent gang members.

Police said they put two in County Jail from Sunday's Halloween party shooting, and when looking for suspects in Tuesday's homicide case, they found more gang members wanted for connections with other shootings in the area.

Police said evidence shows that these recent victims typically have a relationship with the suspects. These are not random shootings.

If you want to get involved with the community effort to decrease gang activity you can join organizations like Crime Stoppers and Neighborhood Watch.

KENNEWICK: Good news for all of you bargain shoppers out there, Goodwill is opening a brand new store in Kennewick sometime next year. Thanks to a 3.1 million dollar loan and lots of planning, a very large patch of dirt will be home to a 20,000 square foot Goodwill; half warehouse and processing, half retail. The Kennewick store will be closing, however. You can still say, out with your old couches, TV's and clothing, and *into someone else's hands, just at a different location. ...More >>
