Local family needs help laying man to rest

Posted: Updated:

PASCO, Wash. - The Barela family can't seem to catch a break. On Saturday morning they got a phone call saying that the oldest of Lucia Barela Vargas' children was murdered. Something they are all too familiar with.

"We were not ready for this. Nobody's ready for this," said Sofia Razo.

Razo is the youngest of the Barela kids. She described her oldest brother, Eddie, as the best person she'd ever known.

"He had such a positive aura about him. Anybody who knew him was drawn to him. He was such a loving person, cared about everybody," Razo said.

It was a shock to the family to hear that 30-year-old Eddie Barela had been murdered early Saturday morning in Burn, Oregon. The Barela's mother was 30 when she was killed back in 1998 and Eddie was the oldest of five kids left behind. Now, his five children are going through the same thing.

"After my mom passed away, Eddie, being the oldest, took it the hardest. He could never really heal. He always had a part of him that wasn't all there," Razo said.

Police in Oregon have arrested a suspect in this case but now the family needs help to lay Eddie to rest.

"We just need help to put him to rest. All the other things, we can wait. But we just need to put him to rest. He needs to be with my mom and the only way that's going to happen is if we get all this money together and we're able to let him rest in peace," Razo said.

The family must pay the full amount to the Greenlee Funeral Home in full, a total of around $7,000, and that doesn't include cemetery costs.

An account has been set up at HAPO Credit Union under Julianita Barela with the account number "2256850." Or you can contact the funeral home directly at (509) 547-3316.
