Yakima, WASH.-- A high school senior project is very personal for one student. She'll be raising money for cancer patients, including one of her closest friends.
For Jessica Cadwell the disease became a lot more personal over the summer when her best friend told her she's been battling cancerous tumors in her spine and pelvis. Cadwell said her friend has also been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Cadwell said she wanted to do something for her friend and thought raising money for cancer treatment would be the best way to do it.
She put coin jars in West Valley classrooms from 7th to 12th grade. Whichever class raises the most money will be treated to a pizza or donut party.
"It's really kind of scary to watch, and the people need help and they need support," said Cadwell. "So to come out here and give your support in any way is a pretty amazing thing."
Cadwell will also be in front of Rosauers on 72nd Avenue this Sunday from 9 to 5.
A team from Advanced Life Systems Ambulance is supporting Cadwell's project by providing blood pressure checks for donations.
Cadwell said she's one of the only seniors doing a fundraiser for their senior project.
She hopes to raise around $500 and that money will go to Northstar Lodge and the new hospice center at Cottage In The Meadows.
