ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- Senior quarterback Ryan Robertson (Sammamish, Wash./Eastlake HS) completed 23 of 29 passes for 240 yards and a season-high three touchdowns, including the game-winner with 3:05 remaining, as Central Washington University survived Western Oregon University, 36-32, in Great Northwest Athletic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Tomlinson Stadium.

The Wildcats snapped a two-game losing streak and, combined with a loss by Humboldt State University on Saturday, CWU moved into a first-place tie in the GNAC standings at 6-3 in conference play. The Wildcats are now 6-4 overall, while Western Oregon fell to 5-5 overall and 5-4 in the GNAC.

Robertson completed his first 11 passes, and 16 of 18 in the first half, as the Wildcats built a commanding 24-3 halftime lead. The CWU lead remained intact into the third quarter, as the hosts scored a safety on a blocked punt by junior Stan Langlow (University Place, Wash./Curtis HS) and a field goal by senior Sean Davis (Federal Way, Wash./Todd Beamer HS), while Western Oregon managed just a touchdown in the period on its opening series, and the Wildcats took a 29-10 advantage into the final quarter.

Western Oregon mounted its comeback throughout the period, scoring on its first offensive series and then closing to within a five-point margin after Lucas Gonsalves' 89-yard punt return for a touchdown. The Wolves then took their only lead of the game on a 30-yard halfback pass from Joe Harris to Antoinne Wafer with 6:19 remaining, and the two-point conversion made it a 32-29 count in favor of WOU.

Robertson engineered a Wildcat rally on its very next series, however. Completions to senior Tavoy Moore (Long Beach, Calif./Gahr HS) on two of the first three plays of the drive took the ball to midfield, and freshman Jordan Todd (Bellevue, Wash./Interlake HS) then had four consecutive carries to take the ball into the red zone. Robertson then found senior Anthony Spain (Grants Pass, Ore./North Valley HS) for a 19-yard scoring strike on a play where Spain made the catch from the seat of his pants after slipping inside the end zone.

Western Oregon began to ascend down the field, aided by a 27-yard pass play and 15-yard CWU penalty on its second play of the series that gave the Wolves possession at the Wildcats' 42. WOU would get as close as the 23 yard line with third and six in the final minute, but a sack by junior Gabe Bruno (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) sent the Wolves back 12 yards and the visitors turned it over on downs after a fourth-down incompletion.

Todd finished as the game's leading rusher with 90 yards on 18 carries, filling in for senior Demetrius Sumler (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS), who left the game in the first half due to injury and did not return after a 37-yard, nine-carry performance. Moore and Spain were the Wildcats' top two receivers with nine and six catches, respectively.

Ryan Bergman completed just 14 of 30 passes for Western Oregon, but netted 229 yards and two touchdowns on those 14 completions.

CWU finished the game with a 379-271 edge in total offense, and the Wildcats did not have a turnover for just the second time this season.

The Wildcats will finish their 2012 season next Saturday (Nov. 10) when they host Dixie State on Senior Day at Tomlinson Stadium. Kickoff versus the Red Storm is set for noon Pacific Standard Time.
