Department asks special needs families to reduce support payments

Posted: Updated:

VANCOUVER, Wash. - The Department of Social and Health Services is asking families who adopted special needs children to voluntarily reduce their monthly support payments.

The department sent letters to over 9,000 families, asking for those who can afford a reduction to let the department know.

The state cannot cut the payments without permission because they are set in contracts with the families. Amounts range from about $400 to $1,400 per child and total around $91 million this year.

Special needs children include minorities, sets of siblings, older children, and those with mental or physical disabilities.

The legislature ordered this request because they are looking for ways to cut spending.
